Episode 229: Cola Boyy Tribute
This week on the pod, we paid tribute to Oxnard legend Cola Boyy aka The Kid Born In Space aka The Disabled Disco Innovator aka the Instant Classic Generator aka Matthew Urango. Check it out here, here, or here and check the playlist here or here. I had Matt on the pod back in 2020 for episode 61 so check that out here, here or here.
Matt was a radical dude who carved out his own path and changed the texture of the musical landscape in the city of Oxnard. He found success in his music, hung with famous dudes, and traveled the world but never got jaded and reminded us to not forget where we came from.
He was a punk lifer, who even when he was sitting on a golden pop hook never lost his edge. Dropping a bubble-gummy reggae single called “To Be Rich Should Be a Crime” would be completely absurd for someone who wasn’t Cola Boyy - but that was him in a nutshell.
I get stoked when anyone from Oxnard does something spectacular and Matt did just that. I was so proud of him, like I’m proud of many of the kids that came up in the generations of the Nardcore scene that followed mine. I’ll miss him dearly.
Just to drop a bit of his punk stuff in the spirit of this Substack/podcast, here’s his hardcore band El Mariachi bringin’ the heat:
RIP to Nik Ulmer who was in that band as well.
Hug your friends. RIP Cola Boyy.
