Episode 216: Oi for a Cloudy Day
What’s up everyone? Killer pod this week. Check it out here, here, or here, and check out the playlist here or here.
Longtime listeners of the pod will remember this podcast started mostly interviewing people from the Nardcore scene. This Friday night in Oxnard, I’ll be taking part in an event where we will be discussing the 40 plus year history of that scene. If you’re in the area, I hope to see you there.
Also, I made a zine for the event. You can buy one off of me there, or there are copies available at Shining Life Press. Be sure to grab those In Effect, Hardware, and Contention anthologies while you’re there too!
Onto the episode!
This week, we saw the return of trivia with Bedge going head to head with the still undefeated champ, Dan Sant.
Onto the tunes!
Stigmatism put out a new record on Static Shock that’s a contender for album of the year. Punishing ‘83 style NYHC that never takes its foot off the gas. Totally killer.
COUPE-GORGE threw their name in the chapeau of AOTY contenders as well. This is dudes from the FrOi! scene taking you on a hardcore audio journey. I plucked a couple tracks, but this thing is much better listened to in long form as the track sequencing is one of the best things about this record.
Australia’s Brut put out this catchy self-titled EP. Australia is home for three of my favorite current bands, and Brut is no slouch either.
Bootcamp out of Iowa City put out a demo that has a wild recording. I can’t decide if the recording enhances it or detracts from how good the songs actually are. What do you think?
Most cover comps suck, but Roger Miret and Onno CroMag managed to put together two killer ones in the early 2000s. All three of us chose Madball’s cover of Last Resort “Violence in Our Minds” as the best song across two the two comps and leaned towards the 1st comp being better. However, Vol. 2 brought some heat, especially with the band Beans covering Blitz’s “Propaganda.”
Here are four killer 7”s that came out in the mid-90’s youth crew revival era (before its quick and unceremonious death several years later.) All four of these are great and it was hard to see one go. Which did we choose? Listen to the podcast, fool.
Now what’s the best track? You know this.
Thanks for reading. Hardcore rules. Peace!
