EP 282: March 2026
Killer episode this week on the pod. Check it out here, here, or here. Playlist here.
I’m excited to announce that the Subversive Intent LP will be out May 1st on Rebirth Records. I’m super proud of this record and can’t wait for everyone to hear it…on vinyl, of course…when you order two copies.
Speaking of Rebirth, they just announced their annual showcase show, so if you’re in the Northeast or are someone who likes traveling for shows, this is one not to be missed. Tix here.
We didn’t dive super deep into any new records this month but here are a handful we plucked that Kev and/or I thought were killer:
We did a Collectors Bargain Corner on this hardcore punk classic from the turn of the century. There was a real resurgence of bands playing fast hardcore around this time and 9 Shocks Terror was one of the best. They wrote memorable songs with good riffs and seemed to blend Scandi, Japanese, and USHC more seamlessly that most others. It’s a no brainer for any self respecting record collection, and luckily it won’t break the bank. Havoc Records still sells them for $10, and you can find them in the wild for that price or less on the reg. So if you don’t have it, handle business, people.
I don’t like any rap prior to Paid In Full so I’m probably not the best judge of early ‘80s rap. Maybe these three parts are awesome and I’m lacking taste…it wouldn’t be the first time. It seems like a terrible idea on paper, but some classic hardcore punk bands attempted to weave rap sections into their songs in the first half of the 1980s. There’s no swerve here, it was also a terrible idea in practice.
Let’s count down the top 3 worst…
Youth Brigade “Men In Blue” Sound and Fury LP 1983
This LP is an all-time classic and the first three minutes of this song rule, but that rap part…oof…not the best, but not the worst! Shawn Stern’s voice actually kinda works on the part. It’s killer, unique, and he enunciates well. So this part blows, sure, but it’s not the worst by any means.
7 Seconds “Colorblind” The Crew LP 1984
Another great song until the end, then…oof. Kevin doesn’t punch his words as well as Shawn; he’s kinda just rapping in the background. The woahs are cool and help weave this into the fabric of the song more, making it a legit 7 Seconds part, and not some total oddball section. Still, it’s not great, people…but for sure not the worst.
False Prophets “Banana Split Republic” International P.E.A.C.E. Benefit Compilation LP 1984
This isn’t only the worst rap part in 80’s hardcore, it’s one of the worst songs of all time of any genre. Yes, even worse than that 4 Non Blondes song (maybe). It hurts me to slag this so hard because I legitimately enjoy those first two False Prophets 7”s. Peep “Overkill” and “Good Clean Fun”…sick tunes. “Banana Split Republic”? Nah, dude. The rap part is awful and if you make it through that section, they hit you over the head with more bullshit. A true aural tragedy here.
Kev stepped up to challenge undefeated 185 Miles South trivia champion, Daniel “Deez Questions Are Too Easy” Sant in a duel that ended in controversy. No spoilers, but old referee, Bedge, was sorely missed.
Casey Jones from No For An Answer / Ignite joined me for the interview. I’ve said it a million times before but Ignite was my entry band into hardcore back in 1996 so they’re a super important band to me. We went through early gig memories, and him playing with No For An Answer, Justice League, Ignite, and more.
We’ve now had Joe D. Foster, Brett and Casey on…so where you at Zoli?
Oh shit, there he is behind a young Casey Jones singing along to MIA.
